The hijackers left behind statements invoking Islam, quoting Islamic texts, and presenting their deaths as religious sacrifice “Istichhad”. Their spiritual leader, Osama bin Laden, was a Muslim who openly justified his war in the name of Islam and claimed to be fighting for Muslims. The people who sheltered al-Qaeda were Muslims. Its members were Muslims. Its financiers were Muslims. And many of those who celebrated the massacre celebrated it as a victory against the “infidels.” But we are still expected to repeat the absurd slogan: “Islam had nothing to do with 9/11.” Nothing? Really?

RepostedDan Burmawi@DanBurmawyI have never paid attention to a single conspiracy theory about 9/11, not only because they are stupid, but because I know Islam. I was there on 9/11. I saw with my own eyes the celebrations and heard the allahu akbars. And I know that were it not for Western influence over Arab governments, Osama bin Laden would have been crowned caliph, emperor of the Muslims, after that day. Humans are curious creatures, and they need explanations to feel secure. Our anxiety refuses to find the simple truth satisfying. Add to that Western naivety and ignorance of Islam, and you have the soil in which these conspiracy theories grew, and then the Jew-haters harvested them to practice their favorite hobby. The same dynamic drives Western readings of the Arab-Israeli conflict. For many in the West, it simply can't be that the poor, weak Palestinians and Arabs are the aggressors against a stronger Israel, therefore Israel must be the oppressor. The same also with the superiority of the West itself: The reason for American exceptionalism can't be the ideas that built America; it has to be the exploitation of other cultures, and that is why all cultures must be declared equal.

It was one of the proudest moments of my life as a New Yorker. You don’t get to “plant the flag” where we have hallowed ground. Now, they’re electing someone who openly stands with terrorists. Now, they’re electing someone who rapped about freeing terrorists. Now, they’re electing someone who shouldn’t have even been at the memorial, but yukked it up and embarrassed this city while he was there. You’ve forgotten, New York. I’m ashamed to have been from what was once a great city. You’ve rolled over and shown your belly to the very people who took 3,000 lives away from us.
