Overview
Francesco Marconi is co-founder and CEO at AppliedXL [1][3]. Marconi spent the 2010s in newsroom research and automation roles, serving as co-lead of AI and news automation at the Associated Press from 2011 to 2018 [7] and as R&D Chief at The Wall Street Journal from 2018 to 2020 [4]. During these roles, Marconi observed that machine intelligence could identify newsworthy signals already present in public records, such as FDA filings or clinical trial registries, before journalists discovered them [2]. Marconi has held research affiliations at Harvard University's Berkman Center for Internet & Society [9] and MIT Media Lab's Laboratory for Social Machines [6], and taught as an adjunct at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism [5]. Marconi holds a master's degree in business from the University of Missouri-Columbia [11].
Profile introduction
I spent my twenties inside the two American newsrooms most associated with breaking news, the Associated Press and The Wall Street Journal, and came away convinced that breaking news was the wrong unit of analysis. As R&D Chief at the Journal and co-lead of news automation at the AP, I ran some of the earliest production deployments of machine intelligence in journalism, and watched the same pattern repeat. The signal was already in the public record, in an FDA filing or a clinical trial registry, long before any reporter wrote it up. The newsroom wasn't the first reader. It was a late one.
