Anish Agarwal

CEO and Cofounder at Traversal

Overview

Anish Agarwal is CEO and Cofounder at Traversal[1][3], a company building an AI site reliability engineer for enterprise production systems[2]. Agarwal's research interests center on causal machine learning and its application to complex engineering systems[2]. Agarwal holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT[11], an M.Sc. in Computer Science from Caltech[12], and a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Caltech[13]. Prior to founding Traversal in 2024[3], Agarwal worked as a Research Scientist at Amazon[5], a Machine Learning Researcher at Microsoft[7], and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing[6]. Agarwal is currently an Assistant Professor at Columbia University[4], where research focuses on causal machine learning[2].

Profile introduction
Source excerptLinkedIn [2]

I'm interested in how AI systems can understand cause and effect, not just patterns, and what it takes to apply those ideas to complex engineering systems. That interest led me to pursue doctoral research in causal machine learning at MIT, and to found Traversal, where we’ve built an AI site reliability engineer (SRE) for the enterprise. Our vision is self-driving production: production systems that can autonomously diagnose, remediate, and prevent failures. I'm also a Professor of Operations Research and Computer Science at Columbia University, where my research focuses on causal machine le…
