Empire AI is a New York State consortium of public and private research institutions that gives the state's colleges and universities access to high-performance computing for artificial intelligence research in the public interest.[2] The consortium members include Columbia University, Cornell University, CUNY, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York University, Rochester Institute of Technology, RPI, the University of Rochester, SUNY and the Flatiron Institute.[4] Empire AI launched Phase Alpha, the first stage of its high-performance computing system, on the University at Buffalo campus in October 2024, with 96 processors funded by a gift from the Simons Foundation; the system ranked 245th on the TOP500 list and 38th on the Green500 list.[3] The full computing center was scheduled for completion in 2028 on the University at Buffalo's North Campus, running on hydropower from Niagara Falls and reusing system heat to warm campus dormitories.[5]
